At an early stage of the design development for the indoor courts for Fitzwilliam LTC, we recognised there was potential to further develop the innovative roof lighting as utilised at the Riverview complex: the framing became the primary structure, thus eliminating the deep I-section steel portal frame which had, hitherto, been the norm for such large-span sports buildings.
This was achieved through collaboration with T.A. McKenna & Partners Structural Engineers (Who had also been the engineers for Riverview), utilising tubular space-frames which both acted as roof support and framed the day-lighting elements. The reduction in the weight of structural steel resulted in a 30% cost saving of the building's main structure.
