The owners of this home were resigned to finding a new home, as they considered that the inherent problems were insoluble: The first floor was divided into two disconnected parts accessed by separate staircases, one of which annexed the living room from the courtyard, and which also prevented the provision of a dining space; the entrance location, which itself was cramped, destroyed the privacy of the courtyard garden.
The simple solution solved the multiple problems and involved two relatively minimal interventions: a relocated double-height entrance hall, providing a distinct, bright and inviting entrance, separate from the now-private garden; and a light, crystalline steel and glass 2-storey extension, splayed in plan to minimise impact on the courtyard, served numerous functions: the removal of one of the staircases, the unification of the first floor, and the provision of a dining space, whilst also drawing in south light.
